A letter to my daughter, things I wish I was told.

Saying No isn’t disrespectful. No matter what they’re asking for, no matter who they are. If you don’t want to do it, you look them in the eyes and you tell them No.

Your body isn’t a dirty secret, you don’t have to hide behind words like cookie, boobs, tits, punani and pussy. You call them as they are, you raise your head up high and say breasts, vagina.

It is not your responsibility to agree with someone to make them feel better about themselves or inflate their egos. It is not your responsibility to tone down how much of a queen you are to impress people, the right people will not be threatened by your power.

Don’t let the media affect how you view your body, you are beautiful just the way you are. Perfection is unrealistic and unattainable, your flaws, those things you hate so much, are part of what makes you you. Your body belongs to you and only you, you don’t owe anyone anything.

Be kind, always. Do not let the wickedness of this world dim your light, do not be discouraged when other people are not kind to you. Give because you want to, and not because you expect to receive. Help not only those you know, but anyone who needs it, and in your time of need, trust that help will come.

Be strong, because the world will fight you every step of the way on your journey through life. Don’t give up, cry when you need to, rest when it’s required, but always, get up and continue, push and push until something gives.

Above all, do not chase happiness, because it can be found wherever you are, it is not in the distant future, buried underneath an achievement. It is inside you, blooming inside all that light in your eyes. Don’t lose it baby, because I know you’ll light up this dark world.

With love,

Aderonke.

  1. This is a wonderful piece and quite inspiring. You are right with your words. I tell my cousins to say to themselves every morning that they are beautiful and smart because the reality is, the world will throw the opposite at them and I pray that they remember those words in those moments.

There is so much to comment about this piece of yours. Thank you though. It’s really good to know you share these thoughts. The world needs more of us.

Cheers to our strength even when everything seems to crash down🥂
